This extremely difficult hiking route, Sentiero M. Madonnino, is a 13.068-kilometer out-and-back trail with an elevation gain of 1394 meters. The trail starts in a beautiful area with stunning natural surroundings. Before embarking on this challenging journey, make sure to bring plenty of water, snacks, and check the weather forecast.
As you start your hike, you will come across various points of interest along the way. Approximately 3.38 kilometers from the start, you will find Lago Cernello, a picturesque lake perfect for a quick break. Further along the trail at 3.36 kilometers, Baita Cernello, a wilderness hut, offers a cozy spot to rest and refuel.
Throughout the hike, you will encounter several water sources, such as Lago Sucotto around 2.99 kilometers from the start, and other water points at different distances. Additionally, there are viewpoints, information points, and even a restaurant called Ristoro cinque laghi at the beginning of the trail, offering a place to grab a meal before or after your hike.
One of the highlights of the route is Passo di Portula at 5.6 kilometers, a natural saddle with stunning views. Further ahead, at 6.53 kilometers, you will find a viewpoint with breathtaking scenery. As you continue, you may also come across a wayside cross and other interesting landmarks.
Remember to pace yourself and take breaks as needed, especially considering the challenging terrain and length of the hike.
