This extremely difficult out-and-back hiking route takes you to the majestic Pic du Col Taillat in a remote wilderness area. The 12.744-kilometer trail features a challenging elevation gain of 1135 meters, making it suitable only for experienced hikers. Make sure to pack plenty of water and snacks, and check the weather forecast before embarking on this adventure.
As you begin your journey, you'll come across a convenient parking area right at the trailhead. About 5.23 kilometers into the hike, you'll reach the Cabane pastorale du Col de Sasc, a wilderness hut where you can take a break and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Continuing on, at approximately 4.66 kilometers from the start, you'll encounter the Pla de Montcamp peak, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
Further along the trail, at 1.79 kilometers from the start, you'll reach the Col de Gamel saddle, a scenic spot to rest and take in the beauty of the area. Approaching the turnaround point, at 6.37 kilometers from the start, you'll reach the impressive Pic du Col Taillat peak, a rewarding destination with panoramic views awaiting you. Nearby, at only 0.11 kilometers from the start, don't miss the Belvédère de Guestier viewpoint for a stunning vantage point.
On the way back, consider stopping at the Cabane du Besset du Haut - Ax les Thermes shelter located 5.34 kilometers from the start to refuel and recharge before continuing your hike back to the trailhead. Be prepared for a long and strenuous trek, but the breathtaking scenery and sense of accomplishment at reaching the Pic du Col Taillat summit make it all worth it.
