The Olifantsberg hiking route is a challenging 7.685-kilometer out-and-back trail that offers spectacular views and a variety of points of interest along the way. The trail begins at a parking area, just a short distance from the trailhead. As you start your hike, you'll pass by a beautiful waterfall located approximately 0.79 kilometers from the start. This is a great spot to take a break and admire the natural beauty of the area.
About 0.06 kilometers from the start, you'll come across the Fernkloof Visitor Centre, where you can learn more about the local flora and fauna. Continuing on, at around 0.15 kilometers from the start, you'll find a bench where you can rest and enjoy the surroundings. Further along the trail, at approximately 0.64 kilometers from the start, there is a shelter where you can seek refuge if needed.
One of the highlights of the hike is reaching the summit of Olifantsberg, a peak located 3.84 kilometers from the start. From this vantage point, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Along the way, you'll also encounter another bench where you can soak in the views before heading back.
With an elevation gain of 315 meters, this trail is considered difficult and is best suited for experienced hikers. It's important to come prepared with plenty of water, sturdy hiking shoes, and to check the weather forecast before heading out.
