This challenging hiking route to the Pic des Moines offers stunning views and a total distance of 7.6 kilometers with an elevation gain of 629 meters. The hike is expected to take around 3 hours and 20 minutes to complete.
Starting at the Estación de Esquí Astún, the trail leads you through beautiful landscapes towards the peak. Along the way, you will encounter various points of interest. At the beginning of the route, you will come across the historic Borne 309, a boundary stone marking a significant spot in the area. Around 2.3 kilometers into the hike, you will reach the Ibón de Escalar, a picturesque water body perfect for a rest stop.
As you proceed further, at 3.1 kilometers from the start, you will reach the Col des Moines, a saddle offering panoramic views of the surroundings. Nearby, at 3.8 kilometers, you will find the Pic des Moines, a prominent peak worth the climb for its breathtaking vistas.
For those seeking a break, at around 0.5 kilometers from the beginning, there is a café where you can refuel before continuing your journey. Additionally, a spring can be found at 2.5 kilometers, providing a refreshing water source along the way.
Although the trail is challenging, hikers are advised to bring an adequate water supply, wear proper hiking gear, and check the weather forecast before embarking on this adventure. The route is an out-and-back type, so you will retrace your steps on the way back, enjoying the scenery from a different perspective.
