Welcome to the extremely difficult hiking route to Charlies Bunion. This 16.864-kilometer out-and-back trail will take you through the stunning Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Starting at Morton Mountain Tunnel North Parking, you will pass by several parking areas including Morton Overlook Pullout Parking North and South, Nfg Pullout Parking, and Mount Ambler along the way. Make sure to bring plenty of water and snacks as there are limited facilities on the trail.
Midway through the hike, you will reach the iconic Charlies Bunion, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges. This peak is located 8.43 kilometers from the start and is a must-see on this challenging trek.
As you continue on, you will also encounter Mount Kephart and Masa Knob, adding to the scenic beauty of the route. Keep an eye out for the Icewater Spring Shelter, a fee-based campsite perfect for a rest stop or overnight stay.
At the end of the trail, you will reach Newfound Gap, a historic site with a memorial to commemorate the area's rich history. Take some time to soak in the views at Newfound Gap Overlook before heading back to the starting point.
