Welcome to the Canals de la Madera hiking route! This challenging 13.386-kilometer out-and-back trail offers stunning views and diverse points of interest along the way.
Starting from the parking area at Aire de Bivouac de l'Hospice du Rioumajou, you will begin your journey through lush forests and rugged terrain. Be sure to check the weather forecast before embarking on this adventure and bring plenty of water, as the trail is extremely difficult with an elevation gain of 1059 meters.
As you hike along, you will encounter several interesting points of interest. Approximately 6.65 kilometers from the start, you will come across a picturesque waterfall, a perfect spot to rest and take in the natural beauty. Continuing on, at around 5.4 kilometers from the beginning, you will find the first peak, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area.
Midway through the hike, at 5.82 kilometers from the start, you will reach Puerto de la Forqueta, a scenic saddle point that provides a wonderful vantage point for a well-deserved break. Further along the trail, at 5.38 kilometers from the start, you will discover the peaceful Fontaine ferrugineuse spring, a refreshing spot to replenish your water supply.
Towards the end of the route, at 6.69 kilometers from the trailhead, you will find another water source for refilling your bottles. Finally, as you make your way back, be sure to stop at the Hospice du Rioumajou alpine hut for a delicious meal and a chance to relax before completing your hike.
