Schafberg Hiking Route Description:
Welcome to the Schafberg hiking route, a challenging circular trail that offers stunning views and an opportunity to explore the beauty of the Swiss Alps. The route covers a distance of 13.417 kilometers and involves an elevation gain of 1185 meters, making it extremely difficult but rewarding for those looking for a strenuous adventure.
Starting at the parking area near Jaun, you will first come across the Cascade de Jaun waterfall, a picturesque spot just 0.06 kilometers from the beginning of the trail. As you continue along the path, you will pass by the Dorfbrunnen drinking water fountain (0.16 km), the Jaun information point (0.21 km), and the Obere Euschels alpine hut (3.39 km) where you can take a break and enjoy the panoramic views.
Further along the trail, at 2.88 km from the start, you will find another drinking water source near the Ritzlialp alpine hut (2.84 km). Additionally, there are picnic sites and an information point providing details about the area's history and wildlife.
Midway through the hike, at 5.41 km from the start, you will have the opportunity to venture off the trail to reach a peak with stunning views, just 160 meters away. This point offers a perfect spot to capture some breathtaking photos of the surrounding landscape.
Towards the end of the hike, you will pass by the Restaurant de la Cascade, where you can refuel with some delicious Swiss cuisine before completing the circular route.
As this hike is extremely difficult and covers significant elevation gain, it is important to come prepared with plenty of water, sturdy hiking shoes, and layers of clothing. It is also recommended to check the weather forecast before setting out, as conditions in the mountains can change rapidly.
