This extremely difficult hiking route will take you to the majestic Cime du Gélas / Monte Gelàs in the Mercantour-Argentera area. The trail has a total distance of 10.4 kilometers and an elevation gain of 1200 meters, making it a challenging but rewarding adventure.
Starting at the trailhead, you will pass by the picturesque Lac Blanc, located 4.1 kilometers from the beginning of the trail. This stunning alpine lake is a perfect spot to take a break and enjoy the serene surroundings.
As you continue your journey, you will come across the Refuge de la Madone de Fenestre, a mountain hut located 0.21 kilometers from the start of the trail. This refuge is a great place to rest and refuel before continuing on your trek.
Further along the trail, at 5.2 kilometers from the start, you will reach the Cime sud du Gélas, a peak that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. This will be the highlight of your hike, providing a sense of accomplishment and awe.
Throughout the hike, you will pass by several water sources such as Le Lac Mort and various drinking water points to replenish your supplies. It is recommended to bring plenty of water, snacks, and proper hiking gear due to the challenging nature of the trail.
