This challenging hiking route takes you to the stunning Madonna Peak in Vermont. The trail is an out-and-back route with a total distance of 7.142 kilometers and an elevation gain of 425 meters, making it a difficult but rewarding trek.
Starting at the Sterling Pond Trailhead, you will pass by the historic marker for Smuggler's Notch before reaching the Sterling Pond Shelter at 2.04 kilometers from the start. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Continuing on, you will pass by Sterling Pond, located 1.85 kilometers from the trail start, offering a picturesque setting for a rest stop. As you make your way towards Madonna Peak, you will come across the Top of the Notch restaurant at 1.77 kilometers from the start, where you can refuel and recharge before tackling the remainder of the trail.
The trail culminates at Madonna Peak, located 3.57 kilometers from the start, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Be sure to take in the beauty of the peak before heading back the way you came.
