Welcome to the Märzengrund hiking route, a challenging 17.165-kilometer out-and-back trail that will lead you through stunning alpine scenery.
Starting at the parking area, the trail begins with a steady incline as you make your way towards the Otto-Leixl-Hütte alpine hut, located 5.43 kilometers from the start. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy a snack while taking in the mountain views.
As you continue on, you'll come across several water sources, with the first one being just 2.08 kilometers from the start. Be sure to refill your water bottles here as you'll need to stay hydrated on this long and strenuous hike. Further along the trail at 2.38 kilometers, you'll find another water source.
Around the midway point of the hike, at 8.58 kilometers from the start, you'll encounter a beautiful waterfall, a perfect place to rest and admire the natural beauty of the area.
For history enthusiasts, there are a couple of memorials to visit along the way, located at 5.25 and 5.3 kilometers from the start. These offer a glimpse into the past and add another layer of interest to your hiking experience.
At the 3.07-kilometer mark, you'll reach the Heutaljoch saddle, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. This is a great spot for a photo opportunity before you head back.
Remember to check the weather forecast before setting out on this extremely difficult hike, and make sure to bring plenty of water, snacks, and proper hiking gear. Be prepared for the elevation gain of 809 meters and the long duration of almost 6 hours.
