This hiking route takes you through the beautiful area surrounding Merkenstein Castle. Starting at the parking area near the castle, you will embark on an out-and-back journey that will lead you to the "alter Turm" viewpoint.
As you begin your hike, be sure to pack plenty of water and snacks, as well as a map and compass for navigation. The trail starts at an elevation of 376 meters and gradually ascends, offering stunning views of the castle ruins along the way.
One of the first points of interest you will come across is the Türkenbrunnen, a natural spring located approximately 1 km from the start of the trail. Here, you can take a break and refill your water bottle before continuing on.
Further along the route, you will encounter the Ruine Merkenstein, another historic castle ruin that is definitely worth exploring. As you hike higher in elevation, be prepared for some steep sections that will challenge your endurance.
After passing by several caves and natural formations, you will reach the "alter Turm" viewpoint. From here, you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the castle and the lush forests below. Take some time to rest and appreciate the beauty of the area before retracing your steps back to the starting point.
With a total distance of 3.5 km and an elevation gain of 169 meters, this hike is of moderate difficulty.
