Welcome to the Altenberg hiking route, known for its stunning views and challenging terrain.
Starting at the parking area, the trail leads you through lush forests and up steep inclines towards the wilderness hut, Hirschwäng-Alm, located 4.34 kilometers from the start. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy some refreshments while taking in the surrounding nature.
Continuing on, you will pass by the boundary stones dating back to historic times, adding an interesting cultural element to your hike. As you approach the Kuhkarjoch saddle at 5.8 kilometers in, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.
Make sure to stop by the Kreuzkopf peak at the 6.09 kilometer mark for a breathtaking view of the region. The trail also passes by the Altenberg peak at the 7 kilometer mark, offering another opportunity to soak in the beauty of the landscape.
As you journey back, don't miss the tranquil waterfall at 0.43 kilometers in, where you can cool off and rest before completing the hike. Along the trail, you'll also find a picturesque bench and a viewpoint called "Aussicht" at 0.43 and 0.66 kilometers respectively.
With a total distance of 14.006 kilometers and an elevation gain of 967.0 meters, this hike is rated as extremely difficult.
