This extremely difficult 21.5-kilometer out-and-back hiking route will lead you to the breathtaking Grand Astazou peak. The trail starts at an information point in Gavarnie, where you can gather any last-minute details before embarking on your journey. As you begin your hike, you'll pass by the Maison du Parc where you can learn more about the area's natural wonders.
Further along the trail, at around 1.9 kilometers from the start, you'll reach the Cabane d'Alans wilderness hut, offering a rustic place to rest and take in the surrounding beauty. Midway through the hike, at 5.7 kilometers from the start, you'll encounter the Hourquette d'Alan saddle, providing stunning views of the landscape.
Continuing on, you'll eventually reach the highlight of the trek, the Grand Astazou peak, standing tall at 10.8 kilometers from the start. The panoramic vistas from the peak are well worth the challenging climb.
On your way back, you can stop by the Aire de bivouac du Refuge des Espuguettes campsite to rest and replenish your energy. Make sure to check out the spring at 3.5 kilometers from the start for a refreshing drink.
This hike involves a significant elevation gain of 2095 meters, so be prepared for a strenuous journey. Remember to bring plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen.
