This extremely difficult 12.019-kilometer out-and-back hiking route will lead you to the stunning Mount Franklin in a beautiful area. The trail starts at the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trailhead, where you can park your vehicle before beginning your adventure.
Along the way, you will encounter several points of interest. About midway through the hike, you will come across the Upper Lake of the Clouds and the Lower Lake of the Clouds, both offering tranquil water views that are perfect for a rest stop. Further along, at the 4.4-kilometer mark, you will reach the Lakes of the Clouds Hut, an alpine hut where you can take a break and maybe even spend the night if you wish.
As you continue on, you will pass by the Gem Pool, a picturesque water feature located 3.07 kilometers from the start. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to summit Mount Monroe, which is 4.9 kilometers from the beginning of the trail, and enjoy panoramic views from the peak.
For the more adventurous hikers, Mount Franklin awaits at the end of the trail, 6.01 kilometers from the start. Along the way to Mount Franklin, you will also encounter Little Monroe, a smaller peak 5.33 kilometers from the start, offering great views of the surrounding area.
Keep in mind that this hike has an elevation gain of 908 meters, so ensure you are well-prepared with proper gear and plenty of water. The total duration of the hike is estimated to be around 5 hours and 3 minutes, but this can vary depending on your pace and the number of stops you make.
